Optional Residential Time of Use (TOU) Ratehouse with lightbulb illustration

Midstate Electric is committed to providing affordable and flexible rate options that align with our members’ unique energy needs. That’s why we’re introducing an Optional Residential Time of Use (TOU) Rate.

TOU gives members the opportunity to save money by shifting their energy consumption to “off-peak” hours when power costs are the lowest.

clockWhat is Time of Use?

A Time of Use rate charges different prices for electricity depending on the time of day. Electricity costs more during on-peak hours (when the demand for electricity is highest) and less during off-peak hours (when demand is lower).

What are On-Peak & Off-Peak Hours?

On-peak hours are Monday through Friday, 7 to 10 a.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. at a rate of $0.1336/kWh. All other hours (including Saturday & Sunday) are off-peak at a rate of $0.0668 per kWh.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Time of Use?

A Time of Use rate charges different prices for electricity depending on the time of day. Electricity costs more during on-peak hours (when the demand for electricity is highest) and less during off-peak hours (when demand is lower). Both Midstate and the membership save money by shifting energy usage to off-peak times.

Who is eligible?

Residential members on standard billing are eligible to make the switch to TOU. Industrial, commercial, and members on prepaid billing, net metering, and general service are not eligible.

How to determine if TOU is right for me?

Review your energy usage to see if Time of Use might be right for you. To get the most out of our Time of Use Rate, you must reduce your electricity use during on-peak periods and/or shift that use to off-peak periods. Before you enroll, implement changes and track your usage in your SmartHub account, to see what kind of difference a Time of Use Rate would make for your household.

Items to consider when monitoring your usage in SmartHub:

  • Note when your energy use is highest
  • Are you using the most energy during peak hours Monday-Friday (mornings 7 to 10 a.m./evenings 5 to 8 p.m.)?
  • Or is your use concentrated during off-peak hours or weekends?
  • Ask: Would your usage habits help you avoid peak rates?
What about charging my electric vehicle?

If you have an electric vehicle, TOU may be a great option for you. Many electric vehicles and home chargers allow you to schedule charging times, so you can simply program your vehicle to start charging overnight during off-peak hours (when rates are lowest). It’s a convenient way to save money, reduce strain on the grid, and support a more sustainable energy future.
